FDAAA Saddened by the Death of Former Commissioner Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., M.D.

Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., M.D., served as Commissioner of FDA from 1981 to 1983. He died at the age of 76 on February 11, 2010, from complications caused by a chronic illness. A nationally known professor of clinical pharmacology, Dr. Hayes directed FDA's response to the Tylenol tampering crisis, and also may be remembered for his calling for a voluntary moratorium on direct-to-consumer advertising.

After leaving the FDA, Dr. Hayes worked as Provost and Dean at New York Medical College and later, in 1986, was appointed President of E.M. Pharmaceuticals, a division of the German company E. Merck. Five years later, he founded MediScience Associates, a consulting firm, part of Nelson Communications, Inc., and stayed there until 2005, when he retired.
