Association Mourns the Passing of former FDA Commissioner, Dr. James L. Goddard
Dr. James L. Goddard, former FDA Commissioner, died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 86 in Laguna Woods, California. Dr. Goddard served under President Lyndon Johnson from 1966 to 1968. Under Dr. Goddard's leadership, FDA introduced legislation calling for drugs to be tested for efficacy as well as for safety. The law, enacted by Congress in 1962, mandated scientific testing of all new drugs to see if they worked, as well as testing of drugs introduced before 1962 for both safety and efficacy.
